Was Phil Ivey Cheating or Taking Advantage?

In fact wherever there is a large amount of or cash to be made you are almost certain to find someone that is willing to take the risk and cheat their way into extra cash.

The same can be said for Phil Ivey, except we have to be very careful when we mention the words cheat and Phil Ivey together as he is so popular on the poker scene.

Ivey went into Genting’s Crockfords Casino in Mayfair London with a specific tactic in mind that would give him the edge playing Punto Blanco. Although many reports say he was playing Baccarat, in a real sense he wasn’t really playing the real version of Baccarat. It was in fact Punto Blanco, which is a game of pure luck.

The point is that Ivey used a tactic that gave him the edge, and this is his argument in court. He won over $10 million using this particular tactic, which meant using imperfections in the cards to win his large hoard of cash. Many would say he was just using fair tactics, and it is the casino’s fault that they are using apparatus (cards) that allow players to get an edge over the casino. It isn’t direct cheating as he was not using another player to look at the dealer’s cards and so his $10 million casino bonus withheld by Crockfords should be returned.

If you can think back to the days of the MIT Blackjack team, or maybe you have heard of them, then you may remember these guys were also penalised for cheating. Again many would argue that their skill to count cards is something that they were allowed use to give them edge. However, what does let this team down is the fact they were actually working in a team. Check out the film 21 starring Kevin Spacey - for more information on this particular scam on the Blackjack tables you can also follow this link.

In any case the rules are that you are not allowed to use any kind of tricks to change the odds of the game the casino is offering. That is the reason the casinos offer the games to the public at a risk despite that risk meaning that the odds are still heavily stacked favour of the house. It’s their tables, their chips, their establishment and their rules at the end of the day. The main rule being that any tricks to change the odds that the casino have been offering are considered as cheating.

Online poker may seem a little easier to cheat at, but in actual fact there are so many card decks in play that are shuffled after each hand it makes it impossible. However, multi accounting is considered cheating, and if you are caught using more than one account, then you could have your funds frozen and be thrown out of the virtual casino.

In the end, no matter how much we all love, admire and respect Phil Ivey he was cheating. It wasn’t fraud or illegal as a criminal offence, but he did defy the laws of the casino and so he is actually lucky to even get his original stakes back.
