The government of Spain and one of the best online casinos, 888, have settled gaming taxes that the company owes for operation between January 2009 and May 2011. As a result, 888 has been granted a license to operate legally within the country.

The company has said that it has completed a self-assessment tax return and made a payment of €7.4m in addition to surcharges and interest expected of €1.3m. 888 paid the taxes in cash.

A statement read, "Following this payment, 888 believes that it has fulfilled all requirements necessary to receive a Spanish eGaming license, with awards set to begin at the start of June."

Earlier in the week, top rated online casino game operators in the United Kingdom, accused the government of Spain of an “austerity tax grab” on companies that are looking to acquire licenses in Spain. This stemmed from recent news that Spain’s tax authority contacted all foreign companies that have had Spanish customers in the past, informing them it would back date two taxes originating from the late 1960s and 1970s.

This development came days before the first official licenses for operation of casino games online sites were to be granted.

Bwin.party, the top rated casino in the United Kingdom, said that it would pay over  €33m to meet the demands of the Spanish authorities to pay taxes under the new laws.

Sixty online casino games companies have applied for license in Spain.
