Similarities between American and European Roulette

The game of Roulette has its origins in France and its literal meaning is “little wheel”. Back in the 17th century a French inventor, Blaise Pascal tried to create a perpetual motion device and failed. His failed attempt was not for nothing and would give birth to Roulette.

Since then the game has remained relatively the same. A wheel with numbers and a betting table showing all bets that can be placed. There have been minor adjustments to the game but for the most part, the roulette we play today is the same as it was in the 17th century.

Once the game made its way to America in the 1800s, some minor additions were made to make it unique to Americans. Staying true with American traditions, an Eagle was added to the wheel. This not only made it “Patriotic”, but also added a slight edge to the casinos. Other changes that have been made include the addition of more numbers. At first a Roulette wheel only contained 1-28. Now they include 1-36.

In the late 1800s, the game would be become extremely popular in Europe. Most Roulette wheels up to this point featured a single and a double zero. Once the prohibition on gambling took place in parts of Europe, the last remaining place to play Roulette would be Monte Carlo. This is where the introduction of the single zero wheels would take place.

In modern casinos you will find that almost all have the single and double zero wheels. This form of Roulette is played in most parts of the Western world. In most parts of Europe is where you will find the single zero roulette wheels.

The single zero wheels are more favorable since they offer a lower house edge and more of a player advantage. If you find yourself with a choice between the two, it’s always best to play single zero roulette.
