Leaders in Washington DC are Divided on Online Gambling Bill

The issue of working towards legalizing and regulating online gambling in the United States has been a hot topic for the past few years.  Legislators understand the legalization affords the option to regulate, which in turn, allows for better player protection and a more fair and open market.  However, many lawmakers are concerned with problem gamblers and gambling advertisements attracting minors. Different trade organizations and leaders are working to address these issues and simultaneously, lawmakers across the country have been fighting to legalize online gambling.

The Washington Times newspaper conducted an online poll in which they asked their readers if they felt online poker should be legalized.  85% of those who responded said that they did approve of legalizing online poker as opposed to the 14% who were opposed (1% responded that they were undecided).  Back on “The Hill”, the Committee on Finance and Revenue headed by Jack Evans are set to publish a report on legalizing online gambling.  Mr. Evans also happens to be the chief opponent of legalizing online gambling in any form.

Not wasting any time, two Democrat councilors by the names of Tommy Wells and Phil Mendelson have already put forth a bill to repeal part of the law that would authorize online gambling.  His goal (which is supported by other council members) aims to allow for an open discourse on the subject, something which has not yet occurred.   Other leaders, including Michael A. Brown, an independent council member, is a staunch supported or legalizing online gambling and argues that legalizing gambling would bring in money to the district and that not legalizing online gambling won’t stop gambling from being conducted and offered elsewhere.
