Blackjack Variants Leaving Players Scratching

This may seem a little odd because if a player has been playing Blackjack online, then surely when the live game comes beckoning the rules are the same! However, this is not always the case and many players have found this out with a sneer coming from those hot shots that think they know it all.

Most of the time the hot shots are wrong because they also don’t realise that Blackjack comes in various forms and that their table’s rules are not the only rules around!

Should another player volunteer to explain the rules, this is probably a player that understands that there are different variations of Blackjack out there, and as such is probably a player worth watching. Most hardened long term players are able to play Blackjack for long periods of time because they have a good understanding of the game and a strategy under their belt.

One of the rules we have heard explained the most to surprised player is when doubling is allowed even after the player has hit

In most instances the option to ‘double’ is only allowed as the first move when players have 2 cards in front of them. This entails the player adding more cash on top of their bet. The amount can only be exactly the same as the bet made to start the hand, so basically this doubles the bet; hence, the terminology ‘Double’ aka ‘Double Down’.

Doubling with 3, 4 or 5 cards on the table is only allowed on some tables, and sometimes only allowed if the player has a soft hand

A soft hand is a hand that cannot go bust no matter what the next card is. On the other hand, a hard hand is when the hand can go bust. This is usually calculated by using the 10 card as the highest card. Any hand with a score of 11 or below is a soft hand because the highest card, which is a 10 cannot bust this hand.

Essentially what this means is that if you happen to have a hand that is 11 or below, then this is a soft hand and some tables allow soft hand doubles only’

There are very few tables that allow a double on a hard hand after the player has hit. However, don’t get confused here. Every Blackjack table allows a ‘double’ when the player has only 2 cards whether the hand is hard or soft.
