Schleswig-Holstein Revokes Online Casino Law

- Earlier in the year, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein legalized online casino games, separating itself from the rest of the country. This past week, the state voted to eradicate its legislation and rejoin the German Interstate Gambling Treaty. This decision ends any form of legal online casino games in the country.
Last September, Schleswig-Holstein passed the first casino games online bill in the country’s history. It allowed for citizens to play at top online casinos.
In December, the state was further separated from the rest of the country as the Prime Ministers of the other 15 German states signed a gaming bill that suggested banning online casino and poker.
Despite the separation, Schleswig-Holstein continued to move ahead and awarded online casino games licenses to seven of the best online casinos. However, these operators are now unable to do business within the country.
In May, the political party that passed the online casino games bill lost a close election. As a result, three political parties, the Social Democrats, Green Party and South Schleswig Voter Federation, formed a new coalition and took control from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats.
After the new leadership took into effect, it was known that the coalition would want to unify Germany’s gambling stance and have Schleswig-Holstein rejoin the treat, without compensating the seven companies that received licenses. It is now possible that these operators will seek to settle this through legal channels.
