Poker versus Gambling – The Luck Factor

In the US courts the lack of research by the bigwigs has meant that it has been hard to get a majority vote in Congress to finally admit poker is a game of skill.

The powers that be are presented with the evidence time and time again, but you can bet your bottom dollar their arrogance has meant they didn’t even take the time to read any written evidence of research that has been presented to them explaining why poker is a game of skill. If they had read it, then they will have noticed that players such as Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan and more have time and time again beaten large fields of tournament players to earn World Series of Poker bracelets.

Seriously, if these politicians had actually read the evidence as they probably claim they have, then there is no denying poker is a game of skill. With recent votes going against poker’s bid for recognition as a sport, it’s not difficult to see why the USA is having an economic crisis.

Do these guys actually read anything they are given, or are their heads so far up their own backsides that they have gotten to the point that they can be compared to ministers in developing countries such as Thailand?

In Thailand the problem is the powers that be favour tradition over change. This is even evident after many successful countries in this world have shown that change has proven to stimulate their economy. Going back to the US as the failure to spot ninja loans comes to mind causing a disastrous worldwide economic meltdown. Unfortunately these people in power have forgotten everything they ever learned in university.

Flexibility, adjustment, streamlining, and most of all reading the evidence no matter how much you think you already know about the subject. Open you mind and be willing to except that you could be wrong. That’s exactly why marketers should be running our counties. They have the ability to adapt to their markets, so they create appeal and make changes, so their businesses remain successful.

Poker has been proven to be a game of phycology, bet sizing, aggression, mathematics and variation. If it wasn’t, then Antonius Esfandiari, Sam Trickett, Viktor Blom, Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey must just be in the top percentage of luckiest poker players in the world. However, we all know that not to be true. The truth is that these guys know their game, and that is why they consistently win.

On the other hand, gambling gives players a few disadvantages that means that for the most part it is just blind luck when you win. You cannot read the dealer because the dealer doesn’t even know what the cards are, so the physiological advantage that you have in poker is gone. There are no bet sizing challenges or aggressive moves to challenge. In the end you are left with maths and variation, which in the end gives gambling that kind of 50/50 skill/luck argument. However, take a look back at poker’s argument, and you tell me what the odds are in the skill/luck debate!
