Gamblers Tilt Spells Trouble

Studies by a university in the US have shown that there are several bad habits some gamblers possess that are known as leaks.

Leaks in poker are bad points in your game where you lose money through a tell or a bad play you regularly make with minimal EV. Gamblers are also suffering from leaks in their plays at the casino games in the same way and it is only recently interest in the subject has been reborn by comparing casino gamblers to poker players.

The sample of casino goers showed one particular problem that most gamblers have in common. Many of them don’t plan a strategy. For many of them a flutter is fun admittedly, especially for the group that were not worried whether losing the money. However, for the group that did care about the money, but had no strategy they could have benefited through simply plugging up some of their leaks as the perfect way to decrease their losses.

Here’s where the comparisons between poker and casino gaming intertwine. Poker players study their games and spot points at which they leak chips. Many of the casino players did in fact do this, but some of the more leisurely players don’t.

Those that play Blackjack, Roulette, Craps and other games with the same outlook as poker players’ will fine tune the way they play and get rid of their leaks. The result is that both the poker player and the casino player with this mind-set lose less money in a session or increases their bottom line profit margin.

One of the most common leaks found in casino players was a word we hear so much in poker - tilting. Studies on tilting show similar patterns between poker players and casino table gamers in ways they go on tilt. Firstly, stress of losing endless streaks of money in situations where that number just won’t come in, or the dealer just consistently gets Blackjack, puts a player into a ‘steaming mode’. Here the players’ blood pressure rises as the fun of the game begins to go, and the seriousness focusing on the money being lost kicks into action.

It’s like betting on zero and the ball just never seems to roll up there. In poker it can be compared to having Aces and then Kings, but losing a large sum of cash by having both hands cracked. In all cases the players’ blood pressure swells and rational decision making becomes much harder.

Steaming effects of being down on your luck usually makes poker players and casino players bet more on chances that offer no real estimated value. Almost hopeless bets that are more out of desperation rather than a strategic move to make a comeback.

The second leak that most casino and poker players suffer from is called ‘reverse tilt’. Winning a lot of money usually makes player speculate more on their betting and after some time their winnings dwindle.
